Description: This presentation will raise awareness about deaf culture and working with individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing. With greater awareness of factors affecting the deaf community, this training will positively impact those who are deaf or hard of hearing as well as individuals working with this community. Our speaker, Rebecca Rosenthal, works with the Kansas Commission for the deaf and Hard of Hearing, a state agency working with other organizations to assure coordination and availability of services for people who are deaf and hard of hearing.

Description: Trauma-informed practices recognize the presence of trauma symptoms and acknowledges the role that trauma has played in their lives. Universal design is an approach to the design of environments, communication, services and policies to work well for the widest range of people, taking into consideration the widest range of situations. It is not about “special design” for a particular set of people; rather, it acknowledges that designing for the widest range of users will benefit all users in some way, and often in ways that have been unexpected. In this workshop, participants will learn how trauma-informed practices intersect with universal design.
