In the latest issue of Partnering Together, we put together ideas and resources to help you support your child dream big and attain their goals for employment with the help of integrated supports. This issue we are very excited as we have Real Life Experts who provided their perspectives on grooming their children for employment as they grow older. Below, is an excerpt from the Adulthood column, written by Laura, an advocate from the Kansas City area.

Adulthood life stage iconCan I find a job or volunteer opportunity that matches my passion or interests?

Pictured: Laura works at her desk overlooking Union Station. All of my experiences have not only fueled my passion for advocacy and disability rights, they have also given me opportunities and experiences I would not have had otherwise and prepared me for success at my current job at the UMKC Institute for Human Development. Now I am working to help young people with disabilities learn networking, goal-setting, advocacy and self-determination skills.

In the end, I believe that all of these unique experiences combined have groomed me for my advocacy work. I will always advocate for the rights of people with disabilities and my work at UMKC Institute for Human Development has further increased my passion, interests, and knowledge of advocacy and disability rights.
