Attend the MO DD Council Strategic Plan Public Comment Forum in Independence, MO

Missouri Developmental Disabilities Council

The Missouri Developmental Disabilities Council (MODDC) needs help from individuals with developmental disabilities and their family members in Missouri!  They are seeking the input as they develop their 2017 – 2021 state plan! Don’t miss this public forum to shape the future for families and individuals with developmental disabilities to live quality lives!

What is the Missouri Developmental Disabilities Council?

Each state has a Developmental Disabilities Council that works to increase the independence, productivity, inclusion, and community integration of people with developmental disabilities. Councils provide training, community education and support, and get information to legislators and other policymakers.

The Missouri Developmental Disabilities Council was created in response to a federal law, the Developmental Disabilities Assistance and Bill of Rights Act (DD Act). The purpose of the law is to assure that individuals with developmental disabilities and their families participate in the design of and have access to needed community services, individualized supports, and other forms of assistance that promote self-determination, independence, productivity, and integration in all aspects of community life.

The Council engages in advocacy, capacity building and system change through its investment in a grassroots system of 11 regional advisory councils; Partners in Policymaking, a leadership development training for individuals with developmental disabilities or parents of young children with developmental disabilities; and innovative short-term projects that demonstrate measurable results. The Council also partners with others to provide support for projects and programs that help individuals with DD and support families, including Missouri Family to Family and People First.

Why should you care?

The Council’s state plan describes how it will carry out these responsibilities. Development of the state plan is ongoing. The Council solicits input from a variety of sources which include individuals with developmental disabilities, family members of individuals with disabilities, state agency representative, service providers and other advocates. Input is used to determine needs of Missourians with developmental disabilities in the areas of emphasis identified and defined in the DD Act. Those areas are related to quality assurance, education and early intervention, childcare, health, employment, housing, transportation, recreation and other services available or offered to individuals in a community, including formal and informal community supports that affect their quality of life.

Watch for other opportunities on our website, www.moddcouncil.org to provide input for the Council’s next state Plan!
